Distilled Spirits Council of the United States
| The DISCUS team of government affairs specialists, lawyers, economists, scientists and communications professionals advocate for government policies that reduce excessive taxation and expand fair and equitable treatment of distilled spirits products. The Responsibility.org team of government affairs specialists, program professional, researchers and communications professionals advocate to reduce the impact of alcohol on the public, through education and legislative efforts. Department Descriptions Public Policy – International, Federal and State Government Relations. Team of more than 40 lobbyists at the state and federal level who monitor and lobby legislative issues affecting the spirits industry; Interacts with legislators, policymakers, beverage alcohol agencies and control state officials; Fights tax increases; Improves market access and trade practices; Promotes social responsibility policies and programs. Opens foreign markets to U.S. spirits and defends against trade barriers for spirits products; In collaboration with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, runs export promotion program for U.S distilled spirits, hosting promotional events in 18 countries since 2006. The Responsibility.org government relations team leads the effort to end drunk driving and works with partners to end all impaired driving. Communications & Branding - Increases awareness of key issues among media, opinion leaders and public; defends industry against attacks; promotes spirits trends; and hosts media events and category tours that generate positive coverage of spirits in the media. Provide social media and graphic design support to both DISCUS and Responsility.org. Economic & Strategic Analysis - Produces economic analyses demonstrating real world implications of policies impacting spirits; compiles and analyzes industry category data for members; and monitors spirits trends. Scientific Affairs - Keeps abreast of scientific developments and research; interacts with federal agencies and organizations; and promotes responsibility and moderation. Legal Department - Analyzes federal and state laws, and regulations impacting the distilled spirits industry; provides legal and regulatory guidance. Interns will focus on the area of their interest based on department project availability. You will be responsible for a variety of tasks depending on the department including (but not limited to) analyzing government reports and documents, attending committee hearings, data entry, research on key issues, assisting in communications and grassroots efforts, and preparing presentations. All interns will also have an opportunity to visit Responsibility.org to learn more about programs to fight underage drinking and end drunk driving.

Some knowledge or experience in the area of interest is required, along with writing and people skills, as well as, a proficiency in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are required. This is a great opportunity for someone who is looking for an educational experience and resume builder. You will also have an opportunity to have lunch with our President & CEO. Internships with the Distilled Spirits Council & Responsibility.org are unpaid and are intended for the educational benefit of the intern. Hours are flexible but looking for a minimum commitment of 12 hours a week. Multiple candidates may be accepted. Our program is open to undergraduate and graduate students. |
